Since the majority of women are the parents that custody is given to, it makes sense that statistically there are more women than men that are owed support. No matter who has custody of the child, support is due to the family. We receive many calls from custodial parents saying that their state child support enforcement will not help them because of gender or feel they would be helped more if they were a woman. I can tell you that this is not the case with Support Collectors. No matter who owes child support, male or female, we work equally hard to get the support that is owed to you. While I do admit, at time it is harder to get support from female non-custodial parents, we do everything possible to treat each case with the same level of professionalism.

So, Support Collectors is calling out to all you male custodial parents. What are you waiting for! Let’s see what we can do to get your overdue child support support!

There is much confusion for some individuals as to what child support is and what is not. Let’s take a little time to go over the facts:

In your child support court order, the judge determined a specific amount for the non-custodial parent to pay. It could be a weekly or monthly amount to be paid direct to you or to be paid to the county and then sent on to you. In some cases, medical, tuition and child care costs are also included in the order as an additional amount to be paid for the care of the child. These are the only costs that can be considered child support. If the non-custodial parent is not paying his support but does provide a birthday gift or school supplies for the child, these are gifts, not child support.

So, be sure to keep accurate records of all child support payments and also record any “gifts” the non-custodial parent may provide. Good records are really important as your try to recover the support that you are owed and deserve.

Tax season is upon us and the questions on how to attach to a non-custodial parents refund are coming in. Here are some guidelines to remember:

**Contact the county that issued your court order and request that they do an income tax intercept against the non-custodial parent. Tax intercepts are part of the county responsibility and would fall under the area of prosecuting the case. Private agencies do not do tax intercepts since the county does this sort of action at no cost.

** When will you get the refund? Tax intercepts are usually held by the state or 120 days or more so if the taxes refund is take in the spring, generally you will see the county release the funds in the fall.
Remember, in order to get a tax refund, the non-custodial parent needs to have filed a return and also needs to be eligible for a refund.

Support Collectors, Inc. explores reasons why “deadbeat parents” don’t pay child support and offers advice for 2011.

December 31, 2010 Minneapolis MN – It’s the end of the year, and the holiday season serves as a reminder of the hardships faced by millions of families that are not receiving their child support. That recognition is evidenced by the numerous “Deadbeat Round-Ups” taking place across the nation. The round-ups are typically initiated by government child support offices working with the courts and involve issuing warrants for the most egregious offenders. Once the “deadbeats” appear before the court, they are faced with the option of paying-up or being locked-up. “The round-ups serve two functions,” observed Support Collectors’ President, Tim Turner. “First, they are effective for bringing in a number of large lump-sum payments and, second, they serve as a reminder to the others not paying child support that their delinquent behavior can result in severe consequences.
According to a report issued by the federal Office of Child Support Enforcement this year, there are 15.8 million child support cases in the United States. Unfortunately, the report also shows that 43% of the cases, or 6.8 million, didn’t receive any child support at all during the fiscal year. Turner stated “I commend the government child support agencies for holding their own during this economic downturn, but that’s still a tremendous number of families not receiving their child support. It leaves a lot of people wondering why parents don’t pay in the first place.”
Exploring that question further, Turner noted that “many of Support Collectors’ clients refer to the non-paying parent as ‘deadbeat dads’, but that term doesn’t apply to all parents. Really, there are two types of non-paying parents: those that can’t pay and those that won’t. In my experience, parents who can’t pay are usually disabled, truly can’t work and have very few assets. Many of the other parents can pay – something anyway – but choose not to. Those are the parents my clients refer to as ‘deadbeats’, and Support Collectors deals with them every day.”
In Turner’s experience, the top reasons for not paying child support include lingering hostility toward the custodial parent, financial responsibly to a new family, not being allowed court-ordered visitation and poor financial planning. “Our job at Support Collectors is to refocus those parents so they understand that their first priority is the well-being of their child. All other personal issues and financial obligations have to take a back seat to that. Period.”
Turner has specific advice for parents in 2011: “For the non-paying parents, it’s time to turn over a new leaf – a resolution of sorts. Make paying child support a personal priority. Sit down for a couple of hours and write down all your expenses in one column and your income in another. Figure out how to increase your income or decrease your expenses so child support can be paid.” And for custodial parents not receiving child support: “Take action. Now. Anyone who has ever tried collecting child support will tell you that the longer you let the other parent go without making payments, the harder it is to get them started again.”

My name is Toni, and I’m the Director of Client Services for Support Collectors. I wanted to welcome you to our site and to invite you to email or call us if you have any questions regarding child support or collecting child support orders or alimony orders. Even after 10 years of helping parents collect their child support, sometimes I don’t have all the answers so if I don’t have the answer, I’ll make sure I find out who does and get the information you need.

One of the biggest challenges facing a parent owed support is the feeling of fighting this battle alone. Well let me just say you are not alone. One of the first things we try to convey is that collecting child support or alimony is a team effort; each of us has an important part to play in reaching our common goal, the collection of the unpaid support. The first step for you is to fill out the application as completely as possible, the next step is to allow our investigators time to work the case, and then we will discuss the progress of your case. Remember any time along the way, if you uncover information you feel may be of help in collecting your support, please share the information with us! This is a team effort and some of our best leads come from little “tid-bits” of information we get from our clients.

One of the highlights of my job is calling our clients and letting them know that OUR (client’s and SCI’s) hard work has paid off. There is a feeling of satisfaction each time I call a client to let them know that we have received their first payment from the non-custodial parent and that they are going to get the support their family deserves. I particularly remember a recent call to a client that I was dreading… even though it was the first child payment in over 10 years. The payment was only $25.00 and I feared the client would be disappointed. I called the client and gingerly told the her “I have great news, we have a payment – it’s a small one but it’s a start. We received a $25.00 payment”. There was a brief silence followed by a huge “Thank you!! I didn’t think I’d ever see a dime. Even if I don’t get anything else you did it, you got something from him!”
While the amount was small, the rewards were great; we made a client feel like they were finally getting help. To this client and so many more just like her, payment size doesn’t matter; it’s reveling in the knowledge that the absent parent paid something and knows they need to take their responsibilities seriously. Fortunately, most of the payments we receive are far greater than this! Anyway, thanks for visiting our blog and please check back for future posts.

Support Collectors adds another success story for a well deserved mom owed child support

After being unemployed for 6 months, Lana C’s savings had been “completely drained” from supporting her two sons through high school. The California mom was “destitute” when she finally decided to take action to collect her unpaid child support. Lana was owed over $46,000 in unpaid child support with nowhere to turn. Her child support enforcement agency had already given up on her and closed her case. Refusing to give up, she spoke with several attorneys but they wanted a huge retainer to help her collect her child support. Despair began to sink in and for the first time Lana felt like there was no hope.

Fortunately, Lana’s fiancé convinced her that they should research whether there were other options available to get her child support. He found supportcollectors.com and encouraged Lana to complete the application. Her first impression was that “it sounded too good to be true, but I thought I have nothing to lose by trying.” She completed the application and returned it to Support Collectors’ office. Once received, Support Collector’s team got started immediately. Using their network of nationwide attorneys, Support Collectors found an experienced California child support lawyer who was a good fit for Lana’s case. The child support collection attorney was able to secure a lump sum for Lana, who was “thrilled with the settlement that he was able to negotiate”. Support Collectors is quick to point out that they are not able to achieve lump sum settlements for everyone, but they are always looking for a way to achieve similar results through personally customized enforcement remedies. As to the feeling of success, Lana explained “not only was it monetarily satisfying but it also gave me the vindication that I was looking for.” Congratulations to Lana for her perseverance!

Support Collectors, Inc., a leading child support collection agency also announces dynamic on-line application

Minneapolis, MN – PRWEB – June 21, 2010 – Support Collectors, Inc. announced today the unveiling of its innovative new child support enforcement website. “To say this is simply a re-design would be a gross understatement” said Timothy Turner, Director of Enforcement. “The website is designed to enhance visitors’ and clients’ on-line experience and to provide a wealth of information about our services and child support in general.”

The Support Collectors website boasts a robust database of state-by-state child support information, an easy-to-use child support interest calculator and a detailed guide on how to choose a reputable private child support enforcement agency. “We felt it was absolutely essential that parents make informed decisions when choosing a private agency to help them,” explained Turner. “By comparing our business practices to those of our competitors we are certain that parents will overwhelmingly choose Support Collectors.”

Support Collectors also incorporated into the website an innovative on-line application. The application offers clients a quick, easy and secure method to apply for services. “The on-line application is already a tremendous hit and has become the preferred choice of our clients,” Turner stated. “The functionality of being able to start the application, save your data, logout and then log back on with a secure password is incredibly convenient.”

Mary Y. contacted Support Collectors after her husband had evaded paying child support for 15 years. Despite a court order requiring him to pay, Mary’s husband quit his job to avoid wage garnishment. Because she was working at the time, Mary was not able to get state assistance for her daughter. The $7 per hour she was making didn’t afford her the option of hiring a lawyer.

Finally, Mary contacted Support Collectors after searching the Internet for help in getting her owed child support. “I was able to get help because your firm was willing to take me on as a client without upfront payment,” Mary said, speaking of Support Collectors’ policy of not requiring client payment unless it is able to collect from debtors.

Support Collectors gathered Mary’s and her husband’s personal information – including the court order for payment and the delinquent payment history – before its team of investigators began their location efforts. Accounting specialists arrived at an accurate past-due child support total.

When Mary’s husband was contacted, he indicated that he had no intention of paying the child support. Support Collectors hired a lawyer, who started contempt of court and garnishment proceedings to attach to her husband’s current employer.

During the course of legal proceedings, Mary’s husband offered a lump sum settlement that Mary approved. She received a child support check shortly thereafter.
